Maine has historically had one of the lowest unemployment rates in the US, with a high of 9.0% in January of 1977, and a low of 3.1% in January of 2001. The nature of jobs and employment in general has changed greatly over the last 50 years in Maine. 25 years ago half of nonfarm workers were employment in production, while today that number has dropped to 15%.
